Despite a dismal forecast of rain all day (which it certainly did!), the vast majority of entrants still turned up to compete in our annual throws pentathlon on Saturday 20th September. The rain certainly didn't stop play, with some great performances throughout the day, and displays of heroic hardiness from our fantastic officials, without whom the event couldn't take place. We also held a small presentation to mark the "retirement" of one of our longest serving officials, Bernard Johnson, who has performed the role for 66 years, as well as coaching earlier in his career. We wish Bernard all the best, and he'll hopefully be making some guest appearances next season to perform announcing duties at Churchill Playing Fields!
All results for both the throws pentathlon and the 5,000/10,000m can be found on our Results page, and also via the Roster Athletics app and website. The winners of our inaugural Stuart Ryan Shields can be seen below - Catherine Cotterill and John Wild. NEMAA are very pleased to announce that we are holding our third stand-alone Throws Pentathlon Championships on September 20th at Monkton Stadium. Numbers will be strictly limited to 40 competitors, to allow a quality competition for all athletes. You do not have to participate in every individual event, though this will obviously affect your points total in the pentathlon. This year we will also be presenting the Stuart Ryan award to the male and female NEMAA athletes with the highest points total on the day.
Non NEMAA members, and members of other area masters clubs will be charged a small additional fee and be eligible for a medal, but must not displace any NEMAA competitor from a medal position. All competitors must be 35 or over and registered with a UKA affiliated club. Club vests must be worn. Entry lists and results will be shown on the Roster Athletics platform A team of 44 athletes from NEMAA made the journey south to Derby for the prestigious British Masters Athletics Championships, and they returned with an outstanding medal haul.
The weekend was full of drama, with competitors facing blazing sunshine one moment and torrential thunderstorms the next. But the unpredictable weather didn’t stop NEMAA athletes from delivering one of their strongest performances to date. In total, 30 athletes brought home 53 medals:
Gold Medallists – British Champions
Silver Medallists
Bronze Medallists
Competing Athletes NEMAA also proudly acknowledges the efforts of those who battled in tough fields, ensuring the team spirit was as strong as ever: Dawn Ridgeway, George Routledge, Glen Hilton, Hugh Ryan, Ian Humphries, Justin Durham, Marvin Edwards, Michael Salkeld, Amir Ziko, Paul Fisher, Paul Young, Peter Sunderland, Ron Stewart, Simon Allen, and Su-Wan Lewis. A Championship to Remember This was a superb weekend of athletics, showcasing the determination, versatility, and talent of NEMAA athletes across all age groups. Every competitor played a part in making the 2025 British Championships a record-breaking success for the region. Congratulations to all our British Champions, medal winners, and every athlete who represented NEMAA in Derby The 5,000m race will start at 11:00 and the 10,000m race (both NEMAA and NECAA) will begin at 12:00. Numbers will be available for collection from 9am in the clubhouse (or possibly behind the clubhouse, dependent on weather!).

Sunday saw a spectacular display of talent, determination, and team spirit as the North East Masters Athletics Association (NEMAA) took to the track for this year’s Inter Area Challenge at the University of York. With nearly 50 athletes making the trip, our largest squad to date, the team included world champions, national champions, regional champions, and a number of masters league regulars stepping onto the national stage for the very first time.
Facing a field stacked with the UK’s top masters athletes, the competition was fierce, but the camaraderie and mutual support were equally impressive. The combined NEMAA team delivered a historic performance, finishing 5th overall with 467 points, just 20 points shy of 3rd place. This marks our best-ever finish at the IAC, made even more remarkable by the fact that we were unable to field athletes in 17 events. Contributions from our men’s and women’s teams were almost perfectly balanced. The men’s team amassed 236 points, securing 4th place, only 16 points from a podium finish, while the women’s team scored 231 points, finishing 6th and just 19 points behind 3rd place. Several NEMAA all-time records were broken, with standout performances from Daniel Bradford (M35 ,1500m), Gavin Card (M45 Pole Vault), Carolyn Gale (W75 1500m),Gavin Bayne (M70 1500m),Angela Richings (W60 High Jump),Carole Urwin (W80 =Long Jump) and Stuart Lynn (M65 200m). In addition to these achievements, the day was filled with exceptional performances too numerous to list individually. Every athlete contributed to making this a record-breaking occasion, and we extend our heartfelt thanks to all who competed, as well as those who came to cheer and support. Your energy, dedication, and sportsmanship truly made the North East proud. Here’s to building on this momentum for next year! All the best, George & Stuart Full results and points can be seen on the results page |
