An amazing 43 Championship records were set yesterday which also included 3 UK and 16 NEMAA all time! Wow
The largest amount of records broken came in the 100m, 200m and High Jump with 4 out of the 5 records in the high jump breaking both championship and all time marks. Well done to Sarah Johnson (Darlington), Don Butler (J&H), Alistair Hill (Middlesbrough) and Bruce Robertson (NSP)!
The 100m and 200m saw several championship records broken with 2 all time records being set by Angela Kelly, W60 (Giffnock) and Kathleen Stewart, W80 (NSP), the fantastic Kathleen securing UK records in both events, and also in the 400m!
The 1500m and 5km events both witnessed 3 championship records in each event with Ian Barnes M85 (Darlington) adding the 1500m all time ,and I believe UK also, to his ever building profile.
There were 4 championship records set in the long jump and a further 3 in the triple jump. Stephanie White (W60) of Tynedale set all time records in both events respectively.
Not to be outdone, our throwers were tremendous to set 16 records in total over the 5 possible events. Jeanette Kilgour (W70) Heaton set all time in discus and shot putt; Christine Elliott (W60) and Hugh Ryan (M85) of NEVAC set all time records in the weight, whilst Hugh added the hammer to this as well as championship records in the discus, shot put and javelin. Christine secured further championship records in the hammer and javelin.
So many brilliant performances to mention and I am sorry for the ones I have missed. Despite the past 15months encroaching on everyone's ability to train, and compete, especially in technical disciplines it clearly shows the dedication by so many of our athletes. Let's hope this now provides us all with motivation to carry on, drive onwards and upwards and provides inspiration to others. It certainly has for me. Well done all athletes, officials and organisers!
