The weather gods were reasonably kind to our masters athletes yesterday, and although there was a bit of a chill wind blowing, the sun showed its face now and then and there was none of the wet (or white) stuff coming down on our stalwart competitors. Race 1 was won very convincingly by Jen Berry of Wallsend Harriers, romping home in a time of 23:02, closely followed by Sarah Attwood of Crook (23:09) and a fellow team-mate Lucy Wallace (23:56). Unsurprisingly with a third team-mate Emily James crossing the line in 9th place, Wallsend ladies also took the honours for first F35 team, with Crook AC in second place and Darlington Harriers in third. New Marske Harriers took the F45 team prize, with Jesmond Joggers and Elvet Striders coming in second and third.
First of the O65 men to cross the line was Paul Merrison of Sunderland Harriers with an impressive time of 24:17, and Crook AC took the M65 team prize with a collective time of 1:31.46. In race 2, Sunderland Harriers were again victorious, with Stephen Jackson taking the win for a second consecutive year in a time of 27:21. Fittingly, Stephen then received back the new trophy that his father had bought and got engraved to replace the original one, which had got a bit shabby over the years. Thank you to both father and son for the kind gesture. In close second place was Conrad Franks (27:34) whilst team-mate Daniel Alexander crossed the line in third with a time of 28:05. Sadly there was no third Gateshead athlete to make up what would probably have been a winning team! First M35 team was Wallsend Harriers, completing the V35 double with their ladies team! Second M35 team were the host club Middlesbrough and Cleveland, to whom thanks must be given for providing our athletes with a first class course and organisation, and Crook AC's team came home in third place. First M45 team were Sunderland Harriers, with the host club Middlesbrough again taking second place. Finally, the winning and second place teams in the M55 category were Jesmond Joggers, with the host club being relegated to third place in this age group. Full results with individual and team times can be seen on our results page Huge congratulations to our winners and indeed everyone who took part yesterday - feedback has been that the course was very enjoyable with enough mud to keep the cross country enthusiasts happy! We hope to see you all again next year, and don't forget our road relays will be taking place on May 7th so start getting your teams together! Stuart Whitman kindly attended the race yesterday and took some excellent shots - here are the links to his galleries. Consider buying one of his photos if you like what he's done - they really are outstanding shots and he spends a long time standing around in the cold (and often wet) to capture you in action! First of all, you may have been eager beavers and noted down the dates of this year's league fixtures. If this is the case, could you please change the date of match 1 to its original date of Monday 19th May, as the stadium booking clash has been resolved by the ever helpful Monkton staff, big thanks to Sue and Claire.
In other news, to help cope with what is often a large pool of athletes, the high jump B is now limited to 7 attempts in total. Whether you clear the bar or fail twice before clearing a height, each attempt counts. For example, if your PB is 1.30, you'd be wasting attempts if you start in at 0.9m, as if you cleared all the heights in-between you will have used all 7 attempts before reaching your goal of 1.30. The season pass for our T&F League is once again an option this year, with six matches for the price of five. This is the link to purchase, and it's available until 5pm on the 16th May. Finally, it's not long now until entries close for our XC at Acklam Grange on 1st February. If you haven't got your entry in yet, do it now before you forget! This is an open competition, so invite your club mates who aren't NEMAA members to get their entries in too! The NEMAA results from the above competition can be seen on our results page HERE
Thank you to those of you who've already renewed for 2025, this is much appreciated. If you signed up for invoice reminders, and you've then paid by bank transfer or cash rather than using the invoice to pay, you may get another reminder asking for payment - please disregard the reminder! The reminders are sent out automatically and we try and update them as paid once we know you've paid by other means, but there is a delay for many reasons (bank access, payment in person, etc.) and sometimes they go out before the update is made. However, we DO know you've paid, so please don't worry about the invoice (and you can call Val names if you want when you see her as it's her fault!)
If you don't want a reminder next year, feel free to email [email protected] and your reminder will be cancelled, thank you for your patience! Many NEMAA athletes have been invited to express interest in competing as part of a NEMAA inter-area indoor team at Lee Valley, London, but due to the fact that the BMAF Indoor Track & Field Championships are due to be held on the following weekend at the same Stadium - there was very very little interest to travel to the Inter Area match. Therefore NEMAA have reluctantly decided that we will not be sending a team to compete this year. If you're one of those extra early birds, you can renew your membership right now at the early bird price of £15.60, this rate will remain until the end of January 2025. Remember, if you've asked for a membership renewal reminder, you'll be getting an email at the end of November with an easy to pay invoice - check your spam folders at the beginning of December if you don't receive one!
If you can't wait until then, just use the links in the NEMAA Shop, thank you and welcome to another year of competing! As I'm sure most of you are aware, NEMAA have some amazing world record holders amongst our members. One of them, Kathleen Stewart, holder of the W85 400m record, has been nominated as female masters athlete of the year. If you could please vote for her, it would be great to see her actually receive the award! This is the link to vote for Kath VOTE HERE
