Latest news June 5th Last night we were a victim of our own success, with over 200 athletes competing, and almost 90 of you running in the 1500m, which resulted in a bit of a delay for the rest of the evening. Despite this, the match went well, many thanks to the officials and volunteers for all their hard work. Huge thanks too to Jacqui Etherington for compiling the (many!) records that were set last night. Results here. A couple of requests please:- could you try and give realistic estimates for your races, as a closely seeded race is much more satisfying for both athletes and spectators. Secondly, please ensure you enter the correct throw competition - lots of you were in the "wrong" shot comp, judging from the results. Again, it makes for a more enjoyable experience if you aren't standing in a queue of 40 athletes in the B comp, when you should be in the quieter A one. Remember you can avoid the registration queues by entering and paying online for next week's match here. Latest news Sept 27th Tynedale 10 mile results are now online here, and please have a look at an unofficial endurance Grand Prix compiled by Archie Jenkins. Match report by Archie Jenkins BMAF Track 10,000m Championships, Monkton Stadium Jarrow, 16/9/2017 The annual BMAF track 10,000m championships were hosted for the first time by the North East Masters Athletics Association at Jarrow on September 16th. Despite a busy racing calendar over the weekend, including the SVHC cross country trials and the Northern Athletics 4 and 6 stage road relay championships, 58 entries were received. The event was incorporated in the NECAA Pentathlon Championships and all three races started on time with swift presentations for those who had travelled to the north east. A cool northerly breeze was possibly ideal for the 48 starters on the day. Making her track debut, Great Britain Ultra Internationalist and Scotland 2014 Commonwealth Games marathon representative Joasia Zakrzewski, immediately took on the field in the first race, securing the W40 title. The Dumfries GP was doggedly followed by W35 winner, Luton AC`s Charlene Jacobs-Conradie. On home ground, NEMAA runners Kirstin Farquar, Elaine Leslie and Heather Robinson took the remaining women`s titles, England Masters Cross Country internationalist, Leslie having recently moved into the W50 category. Third last year, Arthur Daley (Gloucester AC) made the trip north worthwhile with M65 success. Mick Casey (Northern Masters and Wolds Vets) and the recent winner (1500m) of the inaugural North of England Masters Championships convincingly won the M70 age group. Ken Chapman (Kimberworth Striders) and Reg Checkley (Heaton H) landed the M75 and M80 titles respectively. Charnwood AC`s Mick Kingsbury (M50) runner up last year in Birmingham and running five seconds quicker than his 2016 time, was rewarded by setting the early pace in the second race of the day. Runner up Gregg Penn (North Shields Poly) missed out on a BMAF silver medal by only entering the NEMAA Championships held in conjunction. Durham`s Steve Everett having initially matched Kingsbury stride for stride eventually finished third overall and with it the M55 title. England 2016 Masters Cross Country internationalist Brian Martin from Darlington Quakers RC, led home the M60 field from Laurence Taylor (North Yorks Moors AC). With David Nicholson (Morpeth H) third, only 40 seconds separated the three M60 medal winners. Scottish Veterans` Jozsef Farkas, the BMAF M35 track 5000m champion and World Indoor 3,000m bronze medallist from Daegu, saw off the challenge of 2016 M40 winner Mark Couldwell (Charnwood AC) to win the M35 age group in the final 10,000m race of the day. In successfully defending his M40 title, Couldwell was the second Charnwood AC and third Midland Masters winner on the day. Vets AC and Scotland`s Ian Johnson, M45 runner up in 2016, ran his usual combative race in a tightly bunched M45 contest. In the closest category finish of the day Northern Ireland`s Steve Cairns was less than five seconds behind. Many of the competitors now look to their respective national selectors for the annual BMAF and Ireland Cross Country International, this year to be hosted by Northern Ireland Masters in Londonderry in November. NEMAA the host master’s area club, took seven age category titles and seventeen medals in all. Kirstin Farquhar, Elaine Leslie and Heather Robinson also further rose to the occasion by improving the NEMAA all-time track 10,000m records. Results for all the races can be seen here.
